LYNX MOSA.ic - The Integration Center (IC)
The "ic" in LYNX MOSA.ic stands for Integration Center. Increasingly, our role is to combine elements used in IT Infrastructure including open source with Lynx technology in a way where the fundamental requirements of safety and security are not compromised. If compelling, complementary technology exists to what Lynx offers, we focus on proving that our customers can efficiently and effectively harness the 3rd party technology in a low-risk way.
As part of our focus on improving our customers’ development timelines, costs, and program risk, Lynx offers versions of LYNX MOSA.ic that come pre-integrated with value added technology from our partner ecosystem.
The "IC" includes:
LynxSecure
A ground-up hypervisor design created after 9/11, focused on high reliability, strong isolation between virtual machines, and immutable allocation of resources to applications on a least privilege basis
LynxOS-178
A real-time operating system (RTOS) compatible with industry standards of relevance to Military and Avionics use cases, like POSIX, FACE and ARINC
LynxElement
The industry’s first Unikernel to be based on a safety-certified RTOS
Support for Rich Operating Systems from Third Parties
Including Microsoft Windows(R) and various flavors of Linux and immunization tools
US GOVERNMENT PROGRAM DELAYS
DoD’s major procurement programs materially overran budgets and timelines over past decade. Greater than 50% of programs were over budget and the programs averaged three years behind schedule. According to the 2022 Weapons System Annual Assessment report written by Deloitte and the Government Accountability Office, of the nearly 40 major defense programs active in 2022:
- 85% cannot meet expected software schedule
- 75% cannot acquire the required software talent
LYNX MODULAR MISSION CRITICAL SOFTWARE
The approach to addressing this is the use of open standards and systems such as the Modular Open System Approach (“MOSA”). Breaking down complex systems into manageable, characterizable chunks simplifies software reuse across systems, accelerates the path to system certification and lowers program risk. Check out the video to the left to learn more about our LYNX MOSA.ic product, a next generation operating system environment built to satisfy today's foundation safety standards and support future needs.
LYNX MOSA.ic is a formation of two concepts:
- MOSA - Modular Open Systems Approach, the DoD preferred method for implementing open systems
- Integration Center - the pressure on schedule, risk and, costs has led Lynx’s focus to one of integration, whether that software is created by Lynx, by the open source community or our competitors
ARCHITECTURE & OVERVIEW
Lynx also provides software deployed on servers on-premise or in the cloud that manages LYNX MOSA.ic based edge systems. This software communicates with platform software to execute manageability tasks (install, software updates or monitoring guest OS /applications within a VM).
In contrast to the approach taken by traditional RTOS platforms—where hardware control, real-time scheduling, security, multimedia, and application runtime services are integrated into a common stack servicing all applications on all CPU cores—LYNX MOSA.ic allows system architects to subdivide systems into smaller, independent stacks which include only the dependencies required.

MODULAR OPEN SYSTEMS APPROACH
MOSA is the path forward to break down complex systems into manageable pieces to efficiently create integrated systems from proven software components. This approach is also critical to enabling manufacturers to accelerate the deployment of innovative new technology. BENEFITS OF LYNX MOSA.IC
Our focus is on reducing program risk, development, costs, and timelines. LYNX MOSA.ic:
- Is the simplest development path to migrate real-time software and/or code to be certified from Linux to a real-time
- Adheres to open standards (ARINC, FACE etc.) enables customers to select best software for their task as opposed to being locked in to a specific vendor
- Is the only RTOS to be awarded a Reusable Software Component (RSC) certificate from the FAA which accelerates and dramatically reduces certification costs for new platforms
LEVERAGES HARDWARE VIRTUALIZATION
LYNX MOSA.ic uniquely leverages virtualization-enabled multi-core processors to simplify software stack complexity and unlock rapid development and integration options. New hardware capabilities present new approaches for platform software to minimize stack complexity, overcome performance thresholds, and provide better application portability properties.
BUILT TO BE MODULAR AND OPEN
LYNX MOSA.ic embodies the integrated business and technical DoD implementation strategy of the Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) defined in Title 10 U.S.Code § 2446a.—Requirement for modular open system approach in major defense acquisition programs. It enables system developers to build systems compositionally using open standards, relying heavily on the reuse of well-tested and certified components.
DESIGNED FOR MISSION-CRITICAL SYSTEMS
Supporting rich features while meeting quality standards impose intractable cost and schedule challenges under traditional platform designs, in which all hardware control, real-time scheduling, security, multimedia, and application runtime services are integrated into a common platform. In contrast, LYNX MOSA.ic provides open flexibility on a robust foundation, meeting the rich system functionality needs of systems deployed in high-threat environments.
DEVELOPMENT BENEFITS
- Enables creation of mixed criticality systems featuring bare metal, real-time operating systems, and rich operating systems (Windows and Linux)
- Immutable allocation of system resources and no underlying OS improves immunity to cyberattack
- Optimized for deployment on Arm, PowerPC, and x86 multicore processors
